About Pura Vida Moms Page
Hi, I’m Christa- the writer, photographer, world traveler, and translator that also runs Pura Vida Moms. I live in Denver with my soccer-loving husband Ricardo and our two daughters, born in 2013 and 2015.
I stay busy making sure that our first-generation Latina daughters stay deeply rooted in their Costa Rican heritage– and grow up to be biliterate in Spanish and English, just like me and Ricardo. Bilingual living isn’t always glamorous, but I believe it’s the most important legacy we can pass on to our children.
Here at Casa Pura Vida, we love to make and eat yummy food, hold impromptu dance parties, read lots of books and most of all- explore the world home and abroad with our kids. We share our life with you- ¡Bienvenidos!
About This Blog
This blog started as an answer to the question Ricardo and Christa faced as brand new bilingual/bicultural parents- how do we effectively root our children in two distinct cultures? Pura Vida Moms has evolved into a resource for all families who wish to expand their children’s horizons beyond the four walls of their home. We create a wide range of original bilingual content, such as our most popular posts:
- Easy Costa Rican Arroz con pollo recipe
- Top Restaurants in Arenal, Costa Rica
- Building Language using Look and Find with Toddlers
- Finding Dory Educational Packet Printable in Spanish
- Torchy’s Copycat Queso Dip Recipe
I created this blog to celebrate bicultural parents who want to fully engage in the difficult work of melding two languages and two cultures into a single, unique and vibrant family culture. Whether it’s pinning an easy multicultural recipe for dinner, finding travel tips to ease family travel, or downloading a free resource to make language learning fun, our readers can count on Pura Vida Moms to be an authentic voice for families of all shapes and sizes.

A native Coloradoan, I was raised in Fort Collins. Despite a childhood full of mountain adventures, I packed my bags and headed to University of Nebraska on scholarship to play in the Cornhusker Marching Band. During my college years, I had the opportunity to fall in love with Spanish on a mission trip to Guatemala. I continued my Spanish education in Costa Rica, where I met my gorgeous husband. After graduating with a degree in Spanish; minor in Music, I moved to Costa Rica to live the pura vida life and teach English in the rainforest. Thus began a 15 year career in public education, fighting for student equity in inner city schools, and creating a unique Spanish for Native Speakers curriculum that has repeatedly resulted in high test scores on national exams. In my spare time you can find me at Zumba, reading a novel, planning a family vacation or laughing uproariously with my family. After transitioning to life as a stay-at-home mom, I started this blog to use my teaching expertise to share teaching best practices. It has evolved into so much more- thanks to the support of my readers and social media followers. I thank you so much for stopping by- welcome to bilingual living!
