Blogging is a super fun career that I created for myself after quitting a job where I wasn’t appreciated- here’s my Yes! moment.
If you asked me five years ago if my job would consist of photographing my favorite recipes, writing articles I love, and spending most days doing fun stuff with my girls, I would have said “no way.” Five years ago, I was a high school teacher at a top performing high school in the state of Colorado- a job to which I gave my all for 15 years.
My Spanish Students
When I first started teaching high school Spanish, many students whose first language was Spanish were placed in my Spanish 1 class- which was as frustrating for them as it was for me. Can you imaging being placed in a beginning English class learning numbers and colors? What I realized though, was that many of those same students were also illiterate in Spanish- they had never learned to read or write their native language.
My first Moment of Yes was to create a three-year Spanish for Spanish Speaker program for high school students- I melded their English Language Literacy and Writing Standards with culturally appropriate texts and multimedia. If I sound proud of this program it’s because I am- and my students were highly successful– even completing Advanced Placement coursework and entering college with Spanish credits toward a major.
The Promise Of A Raise
I worked hard at my job- the first year my oldest daughter was born I worked 12 hour days and missed a significant part of her life dedicating mine to my job. That was because I had been given the opportunity to earn a $16,000 raise- something that would change our lives for the better. (Any working mom who has struggled with the “second shift” knows exactly what I am talking about.) At a chance for that raise- I worked my tail off (a lot of eating sandwiches at lunch while simultaneously working on my computer). And I did it- I had the best teaching year ever!
I was so excited for my end of year review- I had worked so hard- and I was positive that my supervisors would have great things to say about my success. Boy was I wrong! After school ended I went to my principal for my end of year review, and the first thing he told me was that there had been a mistake- and I was never eligible for the raise in the first place. (How convenient). He offered me a new contract with a raise somewhere in the range of $300. I was insulted- to say the least.
I asked a lot of questions about what I could do to earn the raise that I had been promised. When my boss looked at me and said I was lucky to get any money at all- well, I was stomping mad. It was clear to me that I was working for a man who didn’t see the value in my work, and didn’t believe in my abilities. So you know the scenes in the movies or on television where someone just yells “I QUIT!” at their boss and goes off to live their best life? Well yes! That’s exactly what I did. I quit my job and haven’t looked back.
Now I spend my days on my terms- if I want to take a job, I take it. If I don’t- I don’t. I make just as good of money as I did teaching, and I work less than 20 hours a week. I spend time with my family preparing healthy meals and fun activities for us to enjoy together. (I especially love saving money- check out this great coupon offer!)
