Paddington 2 Movie Review

Paddington 2 is a super fun movie that takes viewers into the heart of London with Paddington. More about the movie in our Paddington 2 movie review for parents.

Paddington 2 Movie Review

Last weekend our family was provided with free screening tickets to preview the new Paddington 2 movie in theaters, and we had a lot of fun together.  Over the years, we have really enjoyed reading Paddington books together- and I have great memories of Paddington from my childhood as well. I even got to play Paddington in the 2nd grade play- in a suit my mom spent hours making. Needless to say, we were all excited to see the movie.

Before we went to the movie, we watched this Paddington 2 movie trailer together so the kids would have an idea of what we were going to see. The kids love the part where Paddington cleans the windows with his rump. 🙂

About Paddington 2

Following the worldwide hit “Paddington,” one of the most successful family films of all time, this much-anticipated sequel finds Paddington (Ben Whishaw) happily settled with the Brown family in London, where he has become a popular member of the local community, spreading joy and marmalade wherever he goes.

While searching for the perfect present for his beloved Aunt Lucy’s hundredth birthday, Paddington sees a unique pop-up book (affiliate) in Mr. Gruber’s antique shop, and embarks upon a series of odd jobs to buy it.  But when the book is stolen, it’s up to Paddington and the Browns to unmask the thief.

Paddington 2 Movie Review

Paddington 2 was filmed in central London, which I have had the pleasure to visit twice. The scenes of London are phenpmenally beautifl, and made us all want to jump on a plane immediately. Plus, I love Hugh Grant, who plays the villian Phoenix Buchanan, and he was phenomenal in the film.

We took my 2 year old and 4 year old to the movie, and it was Little Sister’s first movie in the theater. Both girls loved the comedic parts of the film, and especially those starring Paddington. The window ashing scenes and the toothbrush scenes.

The plot of the film is so well done- but it is a bit complicated for younger viewers. It revolves around the thief dressing up in different costumes to commit (minor) crimes- and my kids didn’t really understand it. As an adult, I really appreciated the complexity of the plot as an adult viewer, and the kids still enjoyed the comedic parts.

I am impressed that Common Sense Media’s review includes “messages about compassion, empathy, kindness, and the importance of families”, and has recognized PADDINGTON 2 with the Common Sense Seal, a special designation for movies and TV series/specials that offer families an exceptional media experience.

I would recommend this movie, which is rated PG, for kids 4 and up. My 2 year old left the movie stressed and a little scared of some of the more intense action sequences, and she has voiced that she would rather not see Paddington 2 again. (Spoiler alert- there’s a scene at the very end of the movie where Paddington is trapped in a train car underwater. Mrs. Brown is unable to get him out, and for a few seconds, it seems that Paddington might not make it. He does- but my 2 year old really did not like that sequence at all.) Our 4 year old thought the entire movie was super fun, and still talks and laughs about it days later.
