We’ve found a drug free solution for chronic lower back pain relief thanks to the Omron Avail TENS device- simple to use in the home to relieve pain without pills.
We’ve been testing our Omron Avail TENS device now for 30 days at home. If you are just joining us, you might want to pop back to read how chronic back pain has affected my husband’s life, and then four ways his life has gotten better after using the Omron for two consecutive weeks.
After 30 days of testing it out, I’m ready to report how the device worked for the relief of chronic pain. Is it worth it? I’ll tell you that too!
My husband had started using the device each night before bed, and combining it with ice and heat and stretching to relieve his chronic back pain. As he used the device more, he was also able to use the deeper pulse on the TENS, which started to relieve pain for longer periods of time after the treatment was finished.
Did the Omron Avail cure him of chronic pain? No- TENS devices do not cure the source of the pain but provide immediate, temporary relief. However, I can tell you that using the device got him through some really painful times- and has lessened the frequency of those painful times over the past month. We’ve also discovered some additional self-care habits that heighten the benefits of using the Omron Avail as opposed to just using a TENS device on its own.
Self Care Habit #1- Make Use of Omron Avail a Daily Habit
We also found the Omron Avail to be super easy to use over time. It can be hard to develop a new habit, and self-care is hard for a lot of us to prioritize. I know I personally don’t always get into a new routine if it isn’t easy.
For example- I know that taking a daily walk each day is so good for me, but it is also a huge struggle sometimes to just get out the door. But I have a lot more success in taking that daily walk if my shoes are next to the door every time I walk past it.
The Omron Avail was similar for my husband- the app is easy to use, and he left it on his mobile’s home screen so when he checks his phone he has a visual reminder to use the Avail device each day. He started to also keep a reminder on his calendar to put the Avail on each evening before bedtime.
Self Care Habit #2- Heat and Ice
Combing the Avail treatment with heat and ice was super beneficial for my husband. He often would apply ice to his lower back for periods throughout the day, and after his evening TENS session he would apply a bit of heat. This definitely upped the long-term benefits of the TENS therapy for him.
Self Care Habit #3- Gentle Stretching
Since the last week or so were holidays, we had a lot more time to chill out and relax. Also, since it was so cold outside we had to find inventive indoor activities to burn off energy- especially for our kids.
That’s how we discovered 1. Cosmic Kids yoga, which we’ve been doing each night, (the kids are in LOVE!) and 2. that gentle stretching and movement was super beneficial for my husband, especially when he is regularly using the Omron Avail.
Self Care Habit #4- Light Exercise
Finally, on the days when Ricardo and I took between a 30 and 45-minute walk and used the Omron Avail TENS treatment, he definitely slept much better and with less pain. He hasn’t gone back to a lot of running or basketball Saturdays with this latest round of chronic pain flare up, but the light activity is definitely helping overall.
The Bottom Line- Omron Avail TENS Device
The bottom line is that we will be using the Omron Avail TENS treatment as part of our long-term chronic pain management- and it’s definitely worth the investment. We love the ability to get medical office grade treatment right at home, and the flexibility to tailor the TENS sessions to when we most need them. If that’s twice in a day, we can do that, and if it’s once or none, that is perfect too.
