Fanta Snow Cone Recipe- Costa Rica

This Fanta® Snow Cone Recipe shop has been compensated by Collective Bias, INC. and The Coca-Cola Company, all opinions are mine alone. #RefrescaTuSummer #CollectiveBias

When summer rolls around Casa Pura Vida we get super excited because the heat brings us back to our favorite climate in the world- Costa Rica! Whether we make our own giant bubbles, homemade playdoh for making huevos sorpresa, or just spend hot days coloring our favorite printables; when we finish playing hard we love to refresh with a cold treat.  There’s nothing more quintessentially Costa Rican than granizados/copos- or snow cones. On every corner, beachfront (and even outside the San Jose airport!)  there are men and women peddling the most delicious, creamy, icy and refreshing granizados in the world!

Granizados bring people together. When we head home to Costa Rica for a summer visit, one of my favorite activities is to head to the local park and find the vendedor de granizados. I love to stand around the copo stand and chat with other ticos about what’s going on in town, and even more- to check out the latest snow cone recipes. There is always a new twist to the recipe- adding chocolate, cereal, or even gummy worms! I’ll never forget sharing a granizado at the airport with my husband right before we moved to the United States- it was the last food from home he ate before boarding the airplane to a new life.

We wanted to replicate this summer magic here at home by creating a copo stand in our neighborhood. It’s a great way to bring together the community (who doesn’t love a snow cone on a hot day?) or to raise funds for a school or local charity. You too can replicate this experience at home with just a few simple ingredients!

For a Costa Rican snow cone, all you need is ice, orange fanta, powdered milk and sweetened condensed milk

Yield 6-8 snow cones

  • 6-8 cups crushed or shaved ice**
  • 1- 12 ounce can Fanta® Orange, chilled
  • 1/2 C powdered milk
  • 1/2 sweetened condensed milk
  • 1/2 cup mini marshmallows (optional)
  • Maraschino cherries (optional)
  • 6-8 cigar cookies (optional)
  • 5 oz or 9 oz clear bathroom cups (this is the traditional way to serve the granizado- any cup will do!)
  • Plastic spoon and straw for serving

** I did not use a snow cone maker for the ice in this recipe. Instead, I did long pulses on the ice crush setting on my blender to grind the ice. It worked great!

In a small plastic cup, place about 1/4 cup of crushed ice, and cover with the Fanta® Orange. Next spoon about 2 TB of the powered milk over the ice and the Fanta®. If you are using the marshmallows, add a layer of them here. Using another identically sized cup, fill about halfway to 3.4 way full with crushed ice, and pack down tightly. Invert the cup over the first cup, leaving the ice standing in the shape of the cup upside down over the top. Add a bit more Fanta® Orange to cover the ice. Next, drizzle sweetened condensed milk over the top of the entire concoction. Garnish with a cherry and cigar straw cookie. Consume immediately, preferably with friends!

Costa Rican granizado recipe with a Fanta Orange twist

I purchased Fanta® Orange in a 12 pack of 12 ounce cans at Walmart. I found it in the soft drink aisle, right by the Minute Maid® Lemonade and Fruit Punch. Since these drinks all have so many different flavors, they make the perfect fun complement to any summer fiesta or meal. Additionally, I was able to purchase all of the ingredients for this recipe on the same shopping trip, which was super handy. Please also note that not all fruits depicted are present in each product. Juice percentage varies.
