Cars 3 Movie Review

Last night we had the amazing experience of screening Cars 3 here in Denver before it comes out in theaters on Friday! It was out first movie mommy daughter date, and we had so much fun seeing the movie in Real 3-D and in a stadium theater (a first for me!). We had already spent time meeting Lightning (or in our house, Rayo) McQueen, Cruz Ramirez and Jackson Storm at the Cars 3 Tour Denver, and had been getting amped up to see the film using the Cars 3 printable Activity Sheets and Games. The movie was super fun- here’s our no spoilers Cars 3 movie review.

About Cars 3

Blindsided by a new generation of blazing-fast racers, the legendary Lightning McQueen (voice of Owen Wilson) is suddenly pushed out of the sport he loves. To get back in the game, he will need the help of an eager young race technician, Cruz Ramirez (voice of Cristela Alonzo), with her own plan to win, plus inspiration from the late Fabulous Hudson Hornet and a few unexpected turns. Proving that #95 isn’t through yet will test the heart of a champion on Piston Cup Racing’s biggest stage! Directed by Brian Fee (storyboard artist “Cars,” “Cars 2”), produced by Kevin Reher (“A Bug’s Life,” “La Luna” short) and co-produced by Andrea Warren (“LAVA” short), “Cars 3” cruises into theaters on June 16, 2017. Check out the trailer if you haven’t seen it yet!

Movie review

    1. The movie is dialogue heavy rather than action. I love the universal truths the movie speaks of- teamwork, believing in yourself, and helping others. That said, about halfway through the movie the 5 and under set was visibly and audibly restless. My daughter who is four definitely enjoyed the action scenes, but the plot went above her head.
    2. Latino and proud. Cristela Alonso KILLS her role as Cruz Ramirez. We were SO excited to see our Latino culture and values incorporated into the film -and the underlying messages of inclusivity are so much in line with our family values. Excelente trabajo, chica!
    3. The effects. The 3-D is super well done, and you’ll love the soundtrack. Even if you don’t get to see the movie in 3-D, it is still worth the visit. The colors are so beautiful- especially when they arrive at the raceway in Florida! You’ll love it.

The bottom line

Cars 3 is a fun movie for all ages- there isn’t anything objectionable or scary in the movie. The only issue is the attention span of the kids- and how used to 3-D glasses they are. And make sure not to leave before the credits finish rolling- there’s a cute surprise at the end for those who wait!
