5 Infant-Friendly Foods For Transitioning To Table Food

As we transition our second baby girl to solid foods, I am reminded of some of our “go to” recipes for eating as a family during the transition.  As I mentioned in my post on Costa Rican style transition to table foods, in our family (and for my own sanity!), everyone eats the same food at family mealtimes.  Here are a few of our favorite recipes (with my infant friendly modifications added) that are mashable, slurpable, healthy, and overall a complete hit with the one-year and under set!

1. Taco soup  This meal is everyone’s favorite, (and the meal that I most often take to new moms)! It’s great because the beans and stewed tomatoes are easy for little ones to eat sans teeth.  In order to minimize the sodium content, I make the recipe without the taco seasoning or the ranch seasoning.  I also use mild Rotel, not regular, to cut down on the heat factor. Kerneled corn is hard on mini digestive systems, so I don’t give baby corn in the first year.  Babies don’t get Fritos either!

Everyone love taco soup! My Costa Rican friend Pablo and I enjoying it. Sorry ladies, he's taken!

2. Butternut squash soup  This soup is basically pureed vegetables with chicken broth, but my oh my is is incredible!  It was the first meal I asked for after my second daughter was born, and there’s always at least a bowl of it in our fridge.  I don’t cook in the chipotle peppers, I just keep a small bowl of chopped chipotle peppers or red pepper flakes on the table so that those who want to can add it to taste… babies aren’t usually ready for spice!

3. Picadillo de chayote  Yep, it’s my own recipe and I give it to the baby.  I don’t give her the corn, and I mash up the chayote, usually without the skin.  Yum.

Rice and beans are great first foods too!

4. Sopa Azteca  Another easy and yummy recipe, (and also mine!).  Again, the chipotle peppers go on the table and not in the soup during transition times.

Yum, yum, yum! No chips for baby, baby!

5. Earth’s Best mashed potatoes (affiliate) These mashed potatoes are so easy to make, and thick enough for emerging eaters to feed themselves.  I don’t often buy pre-packaged food, but these are the BEST complement to so many meals!
