We’ve rounded up five heathy and delicious road trip snacks the whole family will enjoy!
Our family loves to travel- and as our girls have gotten older we are planning more and more road trips- whether on a favorite hike here in Colorado or even farther! The road trip is such a quintessential American tradition- and a huge part of how I grew up. Passing on two cultures to our kids is as much about sharing Costa Rican traditions as it is celebrating American ones as well. The road trip is definitely one of my favorites.
Why I Love Road Trip Snacks
One of my favorite parts of road tripping is the flexibility to take more stuff. I’m pretty strict about traveling light on an airplane, and our travel snacks for the plane are generally ones that travel well at room temperature. For the road trip, all bets are off, and I love to pack a cooler with some snacks that require being kept cold.
One thing that I don’t compromise on is flavor- I love our snacks to be delicious food that we can feel good about eating when we are on the road. Our next road trip happens soon- we’ve been invited to the Balloon Fiesta in Albuquerque and we can hardly wait. I wanted to share with you which snacks we are packing in our cooler for the road trip, where to find some discounts on the snacks- and share with you a special outdoor event for our Denver readers!
Road Trip Snacks- What To Pack
Fresh Fruit- My girls love to eat fruit. My older daughter would be a fruitarian if we let her, so I love to have some fresh fruit as part of our road trip snack repertoire. I stick to mandarin oranges and apples usually. They don’t go bad even in high heat, and don’t require slicing so it’s easy to just hand to kids when they ask. Peeling the oranges also keeps the kids entertained for a good amount of time!
Harvest Snaps– There is nothing I love more than having crunchy snacks on a road trip- there’s just something so satisfying about listening to a favorite CD and crunching on delicious snacks while cruising along. It’s also important to me to feel good about the snacks that I’m eating- especially on a road trip day where I don’t get my 10,000 steps.
The Harvest Snaps are gluten free, have 5 grams of protein per ounce, and are baked, not fried. I was super excited to see they have two new flavors- Parmesan Roasted Garlic, and White Cheddar, which I found at Safeway. See below for a special coupon offer so you can save while trying the new flavors! Make sure to visit the Harvest Snaps website for all the flavor and nutrition information.
Raisins- What isn’t satisfying about a tiny box of raisins? Little hands love to pinch out the treats, and I feel good about the natural sugar as opposed to candy or fruit snacks, and again- they take a while to eat.
Almonds– I’m working on keeping a healthy amount of good fats in my diet, and grabbing a serving of almonds is a delicious way to add protein and healthy fat to my road trip snacks!
Sliced Cheese- Since we take a cooler with cold drinks on a road trip (saves us money so we don’t have to buy drinks at higher gas station prices), I love to add sliced cheese to our road trip snacks. I just buy the bigger blocks of cheese at the deli counter since they are cheaper, and then just slice them up and add them to a baggie. It’s a good source of dairy and protein on the road.
Where To Buy Road Trip Snacks
I bought all the pictured food at Safeway, so definitely head on over to try the new Harvest Snaps flavors and stock up on all your road trip snacks. And you can save $1.00 on any two bags of Harvest Snaps (3.0-3.3 oz.) by clicking the digital coupon on Safeway Just for U (Denver area only). Valid 9/9-10/06/18. That’s almost buy one get one 50% off! And our Denver readers can head over to Oktoberfest Denver where Harvest Snaps brand ambassadors will be handing out samples near the event entrance 11am-5pm Saturday & Sunday, Sept. 29th & 30th.
