2018 Word of the Year

My 2018 word of the year is VALUE- and I’ve got lots of reasons why!

2018 Word of the Year

After teaching high school Spanish for Native Speakers for 15 years, when Little Sister was born, I decided to stay home to raise my girls. At the time, I had a newborn and a 2.5 year old- and I was definitely mourning the loss of myself as a career woman.

We had made the decision for me to stay home partly of financial reasons- childcare costs in our area of Denver are some of the highest in Denver, and also because we really wanted to raise our children bilingual, and felt that I was the best caregiver to root the girls in their native language. I was and am 100% on board with our decision- and it has reaped so many great rewards for our kids and family.

However- it’s also been tough to go so quickly from working as one of the top teachers in my field at one of the top high schools in the country to staying home with my kids and blogging. 2017 was truly the first year I embraced my blogging career. I hadn’t felt comfortable telling people that I was even a stay at home mom, let alone a blogger- until this year.

Part of what changed for me was beginning to VALUE what I do as a blogger. I can’t tell you how many times in 2017 I undervalued my skills- so many people at the beginning of the year had blown me off when I talked about my kids or my business that I truly started to feel like what I do takes little talent.

It wasn’t until I realized that writing is a skill that not everyone has that I started to value my blog a bit more. Then, when launched my social media marketing courses and started to train people in the basics of online networking, I realized that what I’ve built in the last 18 months does have value. Even more- the unique perspective that I bring to the world has value too.

So that’s why I’ve chosen my 2018 word of the year as VALUE. I am going to commit to valuing three things-

  1. Valuing the time I dedicate to my family. Being a mom isn’t always recognized as a laudable profession- but I’m proud of how hard I work to raise my girls to be good people, global citizens, and most of all- smart. I’m not going to downplay my decisions to put their needs first- because I am going to value my decision to be a stay at home mom.
  2. Valuing my time as it related to my business. Because I wear a lot of hats, I have to be especially discerning about how much time I spend online, what jobs I choose to take and which I do not, and when I decide to work and when I don’t.
  3. Valuing myself. I’m a former teacher, and have made huge impact on thousands of students- many of whom I am now proud to call friends. I’m a mom- and a damn good one at that. How many moms choose to raise their kids in their non-native language? Also- I’m smart! I run my own business with no outside childcare, and still have time to enjoy my life- because I am a master multi-tasker. So there are a few reasons to value myself, right?

And finally- I commit to valuing everyone else who is valuing themselves. Out the door goes judgment and in the door comes understanding. Hold me to it- or even better- join me!

And that’s my truth for 2018, and the reason my 2018 word of the year is value. What’s yours? Have you chosen a word of the year for 2018? Let me know in the comments below!
