You know when you are the last one in your group of friends to have kids- and you are invited to tons of baby showers and you have no idea what to get the mother-to-be? That’s exactly how former graphic designer-turned-co-owner of Hi Little One felt. Says Nell Lindquist, “I thought about saying to my friends- ‘We had a lot of fun together in college, I’m excited for you- but gifting you butt cream is weird.’ ” And with her creative brain and a market for unique, personalized children’s apparel wide open, one of the coolest small businesses was born. I’m excited to share with you our behind the scenes tour of Hi Little One- a Denver-based small business outfitting kids all over the world with high-quality personalized apparel (for info on Spanglish apparel for kids, check out our review of Ellie Elote!). Hi Little One’s “Birth Story”
Nell Lindquist was living the big life as a graphic designer in New York City, and looking for original gifts to give to her friends who were mothers and fathers-to-be. She got creative and designed personalized onesies on her computer, printed them and ironed them on to high quality onesies. The response was so great, that she decided the business concept might translate to a new lifestyle in Denver. Now she works with her sister Maggie Allen- a mom of three and merchandising expert- to run the Denver-based business Hi Little One. Two fun facts- Nell and Maggie are two of eight kids, and their mom helped to select the company name- because what’s the first thing we say when we meet a new baby?
Hi Little One’s Products
The company specializes in high quality, USA-made onesies (0-18 months), t-shirts (ages 2-12) and tote bags. The apparel is printed using a printer and water-based ink, which integrates the design into the fabric before it is cured at high heat. This gives the shirts an extra soft feel as there is no raised ink, and the colors are super unique. All the designs can be personalized, and orders are filled and shipped, around the world, within 5 business days, and sent in an adorable canvas bag with the company logo. And, 10% of their profits are donated back to help fight pediatric cancers. Here are a few of our favorite products:
New Baby Gift Sets- I love love love the seamless design and tongue-in-cheek sayings on these gift sets, each of which features multiple coordinating pieces. “I run this circus” on a baby bib? Every parent knows that bringing a new baby home feels like a circus- and the baby is definitely in charge! Or the travel set for baby’s first flight- “Frequent Flier” onesie and a tote that states “Carry On.” And finally, I LOVE LOVE LOVE the personalized month onesies for taking photos for each month of baby’s life. Each gift set also includes a personalized canvas bag for shipping/storage.
Kid’s T Shirts– The kid’s t-shirts are SUPER soft, and we got to test drive the Printing Block T-Shirt. I was able to choose the colors that the girls would most like, and they LOVE the shirts. I never thought I would say it, but there is something about dressing my kids in matching shirts… I also love the big/little sibling shirts ” My First Rodeo” and “Not My First Rodeo.” Hi Little One has partnered with different artists to bring a wide selection of styles and designs, and they can all be personalized with different colors and names.
Photo Shirts– Nell mentioned that grandparents love to buy the Little League T-Shirts for their grandkids. Each grandkid, in order, puts on the shirt for super cute photo opps during family reunions or get-togethers. Adorable idea!
Hi Little One’s Denver Studio (Studio photos)
Hi Little One is located near one of my favorite Denver landmarks, Casa Bonita, in a nondescript strip near the Edge Theater company, just off of Colfax and Wadsworth. Nell’s eye for graphic design has translated into a cheery feel in the studio. There is a wall with chalkboard paint, a section to showcase the new Big Top Collection, all of the blank apparel items and shipping utilities, and of course the desk where Nell works her graphic design magic. The crown jewel of the space is the huge Brother printer, which Nell and Maggie funded through their successful Kickstarter campaign, and where the shirts are printed. There are several kid’s tables with games and crayons, and during open studio times, kids can draw their own t-shirt design on a paper t-shirt. Nell then scans the design onto the computer, and sends it to the printer. Kids can press the big green “start” button on the printer, and print their very own t-shirt. Super cool.
