I’ve written a lot recently about my success with the #100Somethings challenge where I walked 1 million steps in just under four months. I use a Fitbit Alta tracker, and my handy printable to keep me on track. Many of you, my readers, have begun the 100 Somethings Walking Challenge (way to go, by the way!), and after a week are asking me… what are some tricks that you have to get 10,000 steps a day? It is one thing to do your daily exercise, but that often does not result in the full 10,000 steps (I average about 6,600 steps in a high intensity hour long Zumba class- and that’s just part of my goal!) Here are 10 tips I found for getting 10,000 steps a day. (My current average is sitting at 14,000 steps a day- woo-hoo!!)
- Wear your tracker. I went with the Fitbit Alta when I was choosing a new tracker because I like the style, but also because I can program it to remind me to move each hour. It asks me for 250 steps each hour, and multiple that times 8 hours of a day, that’s 2,000 steps right there. AND- I just found these awesome dressy Fitbit bands!
- Grab a friend. Most of the fitness trackers have networking built in, so that you can find fitness friends and challenge each other. I have been in many challenges on the Fitbit- which has has a fun chat option to cheer others on or to talk a little trash. Message me and I’ll add you to my network!
- Stand at your desk (instead of sitting). I started blogging at the kitchen counter, and I noticed that I was more apt to move around to get a glass of water if I was already standing up. Plus, the shifting of my weight counted for a lot more steps that I had initially thought it would.
- Clean the house. Cleaning wracks up so many steps for me- especially anything that has to do with the floor. Vacuuming, mopping and sweeping are step jackpots- and the added bonus is that the house looks great too.
- The Fitness Marshall. Do you know about the Fitness Marshall? He is awesome. He is awesome because I can dance and be ridiculous from the comfort of my own living room. His soundtrack includes tons of my favorite pop tunes, and his videos are free on You Tube. Subscribe here.
- Take a short walk. I will often grab the kids and walk around the block and we look at flowers and cars. Other times I will ask my husband to watch the girls while I take a 10-15 minute stroll around the neighborhood. That usually amounts to about 3,000 steps right there.
- Play with your kids. At the playground I used to stand (or sit) and watch my kids as they played. Now, I run up and down the jungle gym right alongside them- or just do lunges, pull-ups, or anything else active while they play.
- Park farther away. I have started parking in the farthest spot from the store and walking in.
- Visit people in your office. If you work in an office, take a few minutes every hour to stroll around for 5 minutes. People often say to have a conversation instead of sending an email, or I also walk while I am on the phone- I just put on my hands free headset.
- Stop driving! If you have the time, try to walk to places that are 1.5 miles away or under. Your body will love you for it.
