Like every other bilingual family I know, ours is always looking for high quality bilingual music for our bilingual kids. It’s so important for our kids to have great bilingual music that reflects their experience as kids who come from two cultures and are trying to navigate their world and form their identity. Nathalia Music’s CD Cuando era pequeña is a bilingual music CD that touches on many of the important themes of childhood, and does so with catchy rhythms that had my girls jumping and dancing the whole time they were listening. Read all about Nathalia and her CD, and make sure to enter the giveaway for TWO COPIES of the CD (US shipping only). (Please note that I was provided a copy of Cuando era pequeña for review in exchange for this article, all opinions are my own.)

Nathalia was born in Colombia and moved to the US to attend the Berklee College of Music. She used her original bilingual music to connect her own kids with their Colombian heritage and Spanish language. When we listened to the CD the first time, my kids loved the album because it sounds like a perfect mix of Latin and American style kids’ music. That is also because Nathalia also taught emergent language learners Spanish through her simple songs, and knows exactly how to connect with kids on an authentic level. She has three albums, Cuando era pequeña (When I was little), From Here To There (debut) and Dream a Little. We will definitely be checking out her other two bilingual music albums soon! Bilingual Music by Nathalia
We love love love Cuando yo era pequena because it is so fun to listen to- and build on themes of things that my kids can relate to. My girls love how danceable the CD is- and I love how thoughtful the lyrics are. One of our favorite books is Que llueva que llueva, and there is a song that uses the nursery rhyme as the intro, and then takes an original twist as only Nathalia can do. I also love “Oh Math”- a song in English about how math can give us “problems.” Any kid who struggled with math growing up will love the silliness of the song. The music has so many varied rhythms, from a traditional rock and roll to a traditional vallenato from Colombia. The CD comes with all the lyrics and their translation, which can be a great scaffold for readers to listen and hear the words at the same time.
